ABOUT PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Professional practice is a crucial attribute to all professions; I believe it is vital as it will help one adhere to a profession’s standards and practices. A Policing profession, I would be using an extra-individualistic view of practice, meaning my practice would come from socialisation and historically grounded. Although the profession of policing starts with training in academy’s and educational wise, it is not until on the job training is going to shape and influence my professional practice, interpretive procedures so to speak, which will help me identify ways to deciding on the way to fix situations that may arise.

ABOUT INTERPROFESSIONALISM

I firmly believe that a policing profession could not function successfully without inter-professionalism, or for that matter, many professions could not. Without inter-professionalism in policing, there would be no further action taken when it comes to certain situations. An example is domestic violence; working with other agencies and institutions, they can bring along their knowledge and skills to raise possible ways to tackle the problem or produce more reports being made. Such as partnership working with community agencies where they can inform clients who may have come to them, to make a report to police. This is seen as a cohesive and holistic approach to practice.

ABOUT ETHICAL PRACTICE

Ethical practice in my eyes is a very important thing. I am a strong believer in doing the right thing in all aspects of life, especially when it comes to your profession. Ethical practice can have many moral theories attached to it, such as utilitarianism. This theory is what we know as being the greatest happiness of the greatest number and I think that is a morally correct thing and also something that is important in the police force. Without ethical practice the system could be corrupt, employees treated unfairly and society not being safe. It is important to have good ethics within the police force.

(POLICING) GRADUATE SKILL SET & KNOWLEDGE

1. Generic skills

Generic skills that any individuals should possess and something I have personally gained through my degree is having written and oral communication skills. I do believe I still have more learning to go with bettering my skills, but I do know they have progressed over time. Also having excellent problem-solving skills is another essential generic skill and something I have too bettered myself with. The primary generic skill I do think every human being should have is honesty and integrity, and I have acquired that through my own work experiences that will and can be applied throughout every industry.

2. Specialised skills

Throughout my university degree, I have gained a specialised skill with writing reports; this alone is an important skill to have in a policing role. To be able also effectively to communicate and listen to a person and to then transfer it into a report is far more complicated than one would think, especially in law and legal settings where everything must be precise and correct with what is being said. I believe this and my ethical practices will allow me to follow all policies and procedures within the workforce.

3. Community funding application development

Drawing from a community funding application done within a unit at university, I have found myself needing certain skills to conduct such things like a community needs analysis. The two main skills being great communication skills and the most important one being cultural competence, due to the project being for the Indigenous community of Bourke. This project is to decrease the rate of juvenile offenders within the community and to put in place programs to deter the youth from committing crimes or gaining a better education or opportunity for themselves. The program has implemented a bottom-up approach after research on other programs, finding the gaps and filling that within our program. I then investigated possible funding bodies and concluded that the best fit would be NSW Department of Justice as this is an overall state-wide problem with juvenile crime and rates.

4. Applied debating: Developing position papers

Applied debate is used when one is trying to render a decision on a topic they have interest in. My understanding is that this is used on topics that may affect the whole country and is something that could be heard within a court or government setting, such as topics relating to laws or policies. With this you can use a position paper to argue your topic and with that I find it particularly useful to imagine myself within a real-life debate. I have gained these skills through life, but more so within proposing projects and arguing why a program is best suited and needed.
